South Kensington Duplex
A sculptural modernist intervention in a classical London house
Our client had acquired the apartment above their own in a spacious converted period house, connected only via the communal stairs. The brief was to design a new stair to directly connect both apartments via two principal rooms, in a compact and space-saving manner. We opted for a spiral rising out of the corner of the kitchen, constructed with a steel core and covered with a smooth matt white plastered finish to match the existing walls and ornate moulded ceiling. A concealed pelmet light within the recessed handrail illuminates the timber treads.
